Frankfort is a village in Will County, Illinois, United States, with a small portion in Cook County. The name "Frankfort" was taken from Frankfort Township designated by the governing board of Will County. Frankfort is located at 41°2953N 87°5058W (41.498133, -87.849549) According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Frankfort has a total area of 15.79 square miles (40.90 km²),all land. In 2007 the village ranked as the 36th fastest growing suburb in the United States. The Village is home to a park called Commissioners Park and some schools like Lincoln-Way East High School and Dr. Julian Rogus School. In 1879, the village of Frankfort was incorporated, and elected John McDonald as the first Village President. The first pioneers came to Frankfort in the early 1830s by means of the Des Plaines River from the southwest and by wagon from the east along the Sauk Trail, a roadway that still exists today. William Rice, the first non-native settler, made a permanent settlement inFrankfort in 1831. Later in the 1840s German settlers migrated from Germany to the area and bought most of the fertile farm land from the "Yankees", who were more inclined to provide services for local needs. The German settlers implemented the first system of resident concern for local lands, which has been maintained ever since. An unincorporated area north of the village is a census-ated place known as Frankfort Square.

Name

The name "Frankfort" was taken from Frankfort Township designated by the governing board of Will County. Local residents incorporated Frankfort as a village in 1879. It also has some reference to the major German city of Frankfurt. It was commonly known as 'Frankfort Station' after the opening of the Joliet & Northern Indiana Railroad through the township in 1855. The official plat of the community dated March 1855 shows the name as'Frankfort' The name was always Frankfort, according to deed abstracts and railroad documents. It is now part of the city of Bloomington, Indiana, which was incorporated as a city in 1881. The name Frankfort is now used to refer to the city's central business district, as well as the nearby town of Noblesville, where the city was incorporated in 1883. The city's name was changed to Frankfort after the railroad was completed in 1885. The town's name is still used as a nickname for the city. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the town of Frankfort and its surrounding areas. The community was originally known as Frankfort Station, but the name was later changed to 'Frank Fort' The town was incorporated into Bloomington as a town in 18 1979. It became Frankfort in 1882. The current name of the town is Frankfort on the plat of 1855, though the official plat dates it to 1855 as well. The village was originally called Frankfort.

History

First inhabited by Native Americans, including the Potawatomi and Sac and Fox tribes, Frankfort was used as a conduit between the Des Plaines and St. Joseph rivers. The first pioneers came to Frankfort in the early 1830s. In 1855 the Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad built a line through an area linking Joliet, Illinois, with Lake Station, Indiana. It was commonly referred to as "Frankfort Station" because of the railroad depot located there. John McDonald became the first railroad agent in 1857. The village was incorporated in 1879, and elected John McDonald as the first Village President. Frankfort Township was named by Frederick Cappel after his native city, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The town was originally part of the Hickory Creek Precinct. Will County was originally divided into ten precincts. The county, in 1850, was changed to the township form of government. The city of Frankfort is located in Will County, Illinois. It is located on the Illinois-Indiana border and was once known as the Frankfort Junction. It has a population of around 2,000 people, and is home to a public library, a post office, a theater, a bowling alley, and a golf course. The area was once part of Virginia Territory before the French signed a treaty with Manitoqua, the Potawaatomi chief, for land in the Prestwick area. In the 1840s German settlers migrated from Germany. They proved to be very industrious and experienced farmers as they soon bought most of the fertile farm land from the "Yankees".

An unincorporated area north of the village of Frankfort (in Frankfort Township) is a census-designated place known as Frankfort Square. The Village is bordering Richton Park to the east, Tinley Park, Frank Fort Square and Matteson to the northeast, Mokena and New Lenox to the west and Monee and University Parkto the southeast. The village is located on the Illinois Turnpike, which runs through Frankfort. It is also on the Chicago River, which flows through the village. The town is located in the Illinois River Valley, which also runs through the town. Frankfort is a part of the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the cities of Chicago, Bloomington, and Bloomington East, as well as the towns of Bloomington West, Blooming Grove, and Westfield. It has a population of 2,816. The city's population was 2,715 in the 2010 census. The population is expected to rise to 2,917 in the 2020 census, according to the town's official estimate. The community is located near the Illinois-Indiana state line, which is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Chicago.

The village's age distribution consisted of 29.7% under the age of 18, 6. 6% from 18 to 24, 16. 7% from 25 to 44, 30.7%. The median age was 41.9 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.4 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there are 95.5 males. The average household size was 3.42 and the average family size was3.13.

Government

Frankfort is divided between two congressional districts. Most of the village is in Illinois's 1st congressional district. A small portion in Cook County is in the 2nd district. The village is located on the Illinois River, which flows through Cook County. The river is a major source of water for the village. The town is home to the Illinois State Museum, which was established in 1872. The Illinois State Senate is located in Frankfort, Illinois. The state House of Representatives is in Chicago, Illinois, which is in neighboring Sangamon County, which has a population of about 2,000. The U.S. Senate is in Springfield, Illinois; the state's first district is the 1st district, while the second district is in Sangamo County, where Frankfort is located. The city's mayor is Democrat Danny Cevallos, who was first elected in 1974. He was re-elected in 1980 and 1988. The current mayor is Republican Tom Corbett, who took office in 2010, and was elected again in 2012. The mayor is a Democrat, as was his predecessor, Democrat Rod Blagojevich, who died in office in 2012, and his wife, Democrat Mary Burke, in 2008, and 2013.

Education

Frankfort is home to Lincoln-Way East High School. The former district's middle school "Hickory Creek" is ranked 5th in the state. Frankfort is also home to Summit Hill District 161, which serves residents of Frankfort. The town is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the city. The Frankfort High School football team won state championships in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009. The school also won a state championship in Boys Gymnastics (2006, 2011) and Girls Track & Field (2014, 2015, 2016), Girls Cheerleading (2014-2015, 2017), Summer League Baseball, and Marching Band (2007, 2008). The town also has a high school that won state titles in Football (2005, 2017, 2019), Girls Softball (2002), Boys GymNastics (2006, 2011), Girls Track and Field (2014, 2015 and 2016), and Summer League baseball (2011). The school's high school football team has won state Championships in Football, Football, Softball, and Baseball. The high school's cheerleading team has also won State Championships in 2007, 2009, and 2014. The district also has two high schools that have won State Championship titles in Boys and Girls Gymnastic (2011, 2013, 2014) and Baseball (2011 and 2013). The high schools are located in the Frankfort School District 157C and the Summit Hill School District 161. As of 2018, the district has a combined enrollment of 1,856 students.
