History
Union Township was erected from Liberty Township on June 2, 1823. It originally contained 35 square miles (91 km²), just short of a full survey township. Because Union Township was familiarly known as West Chester [reference], plus the abundance of other townships in Ohio called Union, the name was changed to West Chester Township effective June 28, 2000. Many census and government records, including the 2000 census, refer to Union Township. Today, it is the only West Chester township statewide. The township's name was ratified by the voters at the March 9 primary election. It is the thirteenth and last in order of creation, and the last township in Butler County to be named after a person. It was named after Union, a town in Ohio that was once part of the state of Pennsylvania. The current name is West Chester, which is the name of a former state town that was also part of Butler County. It has been named after West Chester since 1823, when it was named for the town of West Chester in Ohio, which was then part of Ohio. The name West Chester was adopted by the state legislature in 1824. It became the first of three West Chester townships to be created in 1823; it was the last in 1826. The first West Chester town to be formed was West Chester County in 1828. It had a population of 1,856. It now has a total population of 2,857. It's the only Ohio township to have been named for a person, West Chester.
