Jenkintown

Jenkintown is located just outside Philadelphia along the Route 611 corridor between Abington and Cheltenham Townships. The borough was settled in about 1697 and incorporated on December 8, 1874 when approximately 248 acres (1.00 km²) was taken from Abington Township. As of the 2010 census, the borough was 87.5% White, 5.7% Black or African American, 2.0% Asian, and 1.8% were two or more races. The Jenkins' Town Lyceum Building and Strawbridge and Clothier Store are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Manor College (est. 1947) is a private Catholic college founded by the Byzantine Ukrainian Sisters of Saint Basil the Great. St. Joseph the Protector Regional Catholic School in Glenside is the area Catholic school. Abington Friends School is an independent Quaker school in nearby Abington, Pennsylvania, serving students from age 3 to grade 12. It was formed in 2012 by the merger of Immaculate Conception School in Jenkintsown and St. Luke the Evangelist School inGlenside. The Jenkinttown Fire Department consists of two fire companies founded more than 125 years ago. The two fire company have a total membership of approximately 150 with 50 members composing the active firefighting crew. The district has an enrollment of over 700 students. The school district has a total enrollment of more than 700 students and is home to two high schools.

History

Jenkintown is the primary city name, but also Foxcroft Sq, Foxcroft Square, Hollywood, Meadowbrook, Rockledge, Rydal are acceptable city names or spellings, Baederwood, Fox Chase Manor, Foxcroft on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Jenkintown is located just outside Philadelphia along the Route 611 corridor between Abington and Cheltenham Townships. The Borough was settled in about 1697 and incorporated on December 8, 1874 when approximately 248 acres (1.00 km²) was taken from Abington Township. Today, the Borough is approximately 0.58 square miles and is home to 4,500 residents. The borough is a mostly residential community that is separated into East and West by the Business District that runs along and surrounds Old York Road (Route 611) corridor. The Jenkins' Town Lyceum Building, Jenkintsown-Wyncote station, and Strawbridge and Clothier Store are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Elements of the British army passed through JenkintOWN en route to the Battle of White Marsh in early December 1777. The Jenkinsown Fire Department consists of two fire companies founded more than 125 years ago. The Pioneer Company was organized in 1884 and the Independent Company wasorganized in 1889, an artifact of the historical split between Catholics and Protestants in the population of the borough. The two fire company have a total membership of approximately 150 with 50 members composing the active firefighting crew. The community was named for William Jenkins, a Welsh pioneer settler. The majority of the residential development is located to the west of York Road. This area consists of a traditional small town mix of detached single-family homes, duplexes, and row homes.

Geography

Jenkintown borough is located at 40°546N 75°746W (40.096060, -75.129415) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all land. Pennsylvania Route 611 passes through the center of the borough. The borough is surrounded by Abington Township to the north, west, and east, and borders Cheltenham Township toThe south. JenkintOWN is located in Pennsylvania's Luzerne County, and is part of the Philadelphia-Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a population of 2,816. The city's population was 2,917 in 2010. The town's population is 2,716 in 2010, and it has a 2010 population of 3,817. The population of the city in 2010 was 3,715. It is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs through the borough and into the town of Abington. It also has a small portion of Pennsylvania's Lackawaxen County, which is also in the city. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the early 1900s. The area was once known as "The Bulge" because of the large number of people who lived in the area at the time of the Civil War. It now has a name that means "the bulge" or "the center".

The Jenkintown School District has an enrollment of over 700 students. St. Joseph the Protector Regional Catholic School in Glenside and Abington Township is the area Catholic school. Abington Friends School is an independent Quaker school in nearby Abington, Pennsylvania, serving students from age 3 to grade 12. Manor College is a private Catholic college founded by the Byzantine Ukrainian Sisters of Saint Basil the Great. It is affiliated with the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The district also has a public high school in the city of Abington. It was formed in 2012 by the merger of Immaculate Conception School in Jenkintsown and St. Luke the Evangelist School inGlenside. The school district also includes a middle/high school in Abington and a public elementary school in JenKintown. It also has an elementary high school and a middle school in Abington Towson, Pennsylvania. It has been in the district since the early 1900s. The high school has been there since the mid-20th century. The elementary school was founded in the early 20th century, and the middle/ high school was opened in the late 1950s. It serves students from the ages of 3 to 12 years old. The middle/High School has been open since the late 1960s and the high school since the 1980s. There are no plans to expand the elementary school or high school into the Abington section of the district. There is no high school or middle school.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the borough was 87.5% White, 5.7% Black or African American, 2.0% Asian, and 1.8% were two or more races. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,478 people, 2,035 households and 1,088 families residing in the borough. The median income for a household in the Borough was $47,743, and the median income. for a family was $72,902. About 1.9% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.6% of those under age 18 and 7.2% ofThose age 65 or over. The borough's population is spread out, with 22.9 per cent under the age of 18, 6.6 per cent from 18 to 24, 27.0 per cent between the ages of 25 and 44, and 21.0per cent from 45 to 64. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 3.08. The population density was 7,844.0 people per square mile (3,033.3/km²). There were 2,085 housing units at an average density of 3,652.2 per squaremile (1,412.3 /km²) The racial makeup of the borough is 93.61 per cent White, 4.00% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.94 per cent Asian,0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.89 per cent other.

Transportation

The Jenkintown-Wyncote station is one of SEPTA's major Regional Rail stops. The Lansdale/Doylestown Line, Warminster Line, and West Trenton Line regional rail services all stop there. The station building with its Queen Anne-style architecture was designed by famous Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer. Pennsylvania Route 611 heads south to Philadelphia and north to Willow Grove, where it has an interchange with the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and Doylesttown. Route 73 passes eastwest along the southern edge of Jenkintsown along Washington Lane and Township Line Road, heading west to Wyncote and east to Northeast Philadelphia. Philadelphia's City Bus system provides service to the area along Route 55, which follows PA 611 south to Olney Transportation Center in North Philadelphia, and Route 77, which heads west to the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia andEast to NortheastPhiladelphia. The Jenkinstown-Wynnstown Tunnel runs through the center of the town, heading east to Wynnestown and west to Philadelphia. It is the only tunnel in the city that connects the city to the rest of the East Coast. The tunnel was built in the 1930s and was the first of its kind in the United States. It was completed in time for the opening of the city's World Trade Center in 1939. It has a tunnel that runs from the north to the south, and a tunnel from the east to the west.

Politics and government

Jenkintown has a city manager form of government with a mayor and a twelve-member borough council. The current mayor is Gabriel Lerman. The borough is part of the Fourth Congressional District, represented by Madeleine Dean. At the state level, JenkintOWN is part. of the Pennsylvania's 154th Representative District. and the 4th Senatorial District. All are Democrats. The town's surroundings of Abington and Cheltenham and their included towns, votes overwhelmingly Democratic. The mayor and borough council vote overwhelmingly in favor of the Democratic Party. The city's mayor and Borough Council vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic party. The council votes overwhelmingly in favour of the Republican Party. the mayor and the borough councilvote overwhelmingly against the Republican party. the borough's mayor is the current mayor. Deborra Sines Pancoe is the President of Borough Council, and Jay Conners is vice president. The Borough Council votes overwhelmingly to support the Democrat Party. The borough has a population of 3,000, with the majority of its residents being Democrats. the town's mayor, borough council, and the mayor's wife are all Democrats, as is the borough mayor's husband, who is also a Democrat. the current borough council president is the Borough Council's vice president,  Deborah Sine Pancoe. The current borough president is Jay Conners, and he is the vice president's son-in-law, David Conners. He is also the president of the council.

In popular culture

The television sitcom The Goldbergs is set in Jenkintown. It is based on the 1980s childhood of show creator Adam F. Goldberg, a Jenkintsown native. The show is one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. It has won numerous awards, including a Peabody Award and a Golden Globe Award. It also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series. It was also nominated for a Peacock Award for Best Miniseries or Mini-Series. It won an Emmy for Best Comedy Series for its portrayal of the town in the show "The Goldbergs" in 1987. It received an Emmy nomination for Best Mini-Sergeant in 1989 for its performance in the episode "The Scrutiny Of A Scoundrel" The show has also been nominated for an Emmy and an NAACP Award for its depiction of Jenkins in the film "The Godfather: Part II" It was the first episode of the series to be shown on national television. The episode was also the first to air on the Food Network, which aired it in the U.S. on September 14, 1989. The network also aired it on the ABC network in the UK on September 19, 1989, and September 20, 1989 on the PBS network, which also aired the series in the United States. The series was based on a book written by the show's creator, Adam Goldberg, about his childhood. The book was published in 1987 and appeared in several editions, including the first two.
