North Kingstown is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 27,732 in the 2020 census. The town is home to the birthplace of American portraitist Gilbert Stuart. Within the town is Quonset Point, location of the former Naval Air Station. The historic village of Wickford is also located in the town. North Kingstown has a total area of 58.3 square miles (151 km²), of which 43.6 sq miles (113 km²) is land and 14.8sq miles (38km²) (25.28%) is water. Wickford Junction is a terminus station on the Providence/Stoughton Line of the MBTA Commuter Rail, providing weekday train service to Providence Station and Boston's South Station. In the town inbound to Providence and outbound to Narragansett or Newport, there is a passenger ferry connecting to the island of Martha's Vineyard. In 1723, Kings Towne was split into two parts, North and South Kingstown, with North, having the earliest settlements, retaining the 1674 establishment date. Legends going back to the colonial era tell of a Native American woman being chased by the devil. Her pursuer is said to have left his footprints at Devil's Foot Rock's Chimney at Block Island. The house in which Gilbert Stuart was born in 1755 is in which he lived for the rest of his life. The first elected Governor of Rhode Island to never be seated was David Baker, who was elected in 1715.
History

The official name is North Kingstown, Rhode Island. The town of Kings Towne was founded in 1674, by the colonial government. The area was first settled by Roger Williams and Richard Smith who set up trading posts near Wickford. In 1723 the town was split into two parts, North Kingstown and South Kingstown. The town of Exeter was taken from the western part of North King Towne in 1742. The present day towns of North, South and Narragansett were founded in 1723 and 1742 respectively. The first settlement in the area was made in the early 16th century by Richard Smith and Roger Williams, who established a trading post near Smith's Castle. The name Kings Town was given to the town in honour of the two men who first settled the area. The current town of Kingstown was established in the late 17th century. It was named after the King's Town, which was the first town to be founded in the region. It is located on the banks of the River Mersey, near the town of Wickford, and is now known as the Kings Town of the Merseyside Line. The Kings Town line runs through the centre of the town, between Wickford and Exeter, and runs into the River Avon. The River Merne, which runs through Exeter and into the North Sea, is also called the King’s Town Line, and was once called the Kings’ Town. The river was once known as a source of water for the area, as it ran through the north and west of the Kings' Town area.

It was the site of the first recorded human settlement in the state in 1805. The first recorded European settlement was in 1806. The last recorded human presence in the town was in the 1820s, when it was found in a small area near the town of Wounded Knee. The Town has an area of 43.3 sq miles (113 km²), of which 42.6sq miles (113 km² is land and 14.7 sq miles of land is Water. It runs in the direction of the town from Boston and the New York Turnputes, and also connects to the towns of Newport and Providence.
