Edgerton was platted in 1879, and named for Alonzo J. Edgerton, a Minnesota politician. The city has a total area of 1.16 square miles (3.00 km²), all land. The population was 1,189 at the 2010 census, and 1,033 at the 2000 census. It is located in Minnesota's 7th congressional district, represented by Michelle Fisch, a Republican. At the state level, it is represented by Republican Bill Weber in Senate District 22, and by Joe Schomacker in House District 22. It has a four-seat city council plus a mayor. Two council seats are elected for four terms to two year terms, while the other two are elected two years for two terms for two years. The mayor is a Republican, as is the city's mayor, a Democrat, and the city council is a Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (D-FPL). The city is located on the Rock River, which is a tributary of the Red River. The Rock River runs through the center of the city, and is a major source of water supply for Pipestone County, Minnesota. The Red River flows through the city and into the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, which flows into the Mississippi River. It also provides a source of drinking water for the city of Pipestone, which has a population of 1,000. The river is also used as a route by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

History

Edgerton was platted in 1879, and named for Alonzo J. Edgerton, a Minnesota politician. A post office has been in operation at EdGerton since 1879. The town was incorporated in 1887. It is located on Minnesota State Highway 2, west of the city of Minneapolis. The city's population was 1,000 at the start of the 20th century. It now has a population of 2,000, and is home to a post office with a current ZIP code of 51501. The community is located in the town of Edgertonsen, Minnesota, which is on Minnesota-Wisconsin State Highway 1. It was named for a Minnesota state senator who served from 1879 to 1887, and later became a mayor of the town. The village is located near the intersection of Minnesota-Illinois State Highway 3 and Minnesota-Minnesota State Highway 5. It also has a ZIP code, 51502. It has been named after a politician who served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1887 to 1891, and was incorporated as a town in 1888. The post office was established in 18 1979. 1960 State Basketball Champions

Until 1970, there was only one class in the Minnesota High School Basketball Tournament. The smallest school to ever win the state title was the 1960 Edgerton Flying Dutchmen with an enrollment, at that time, of 94 students. The 1954 Milan High School basketball team of Hoosiers fame, who won the one-class Indiana High School Boys Basketball Tournament, had an enrollment more than 50% larger than EdGerton at 161 students. In 2010, members of theEdgerton and Austin teams were welcomed back to Target Center for a 50th Anniversary celebration at the start of that year's State basketball Tournament. Four of the five starters (Dean Verdoes, Dean Veenhof, Darrell Kreun, and Leroy Graphenteen) would be named to the 1960 All-Tournament Team. The team would finish the 1960 season undefeated at 270. The 2010 team would go on to win the Minnesota State Basketball Tournament by beating perennial powerhouse Austin in the championship game, 7261 to 7261. The 1960 team would also be the first Minnesota team to go undefeated in the state tournament, winning the title by a margin of more than 20 points in the final game, against Mankato, 724 to 723. The school would also become the first to win back-to-back state titles in the history of the tournament, in 1959 and 1960. The state championship game would be played at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it would be held for the next five years until the tournament was moved to the Target Center.
